Useful expressions in Spanish. A must-have for travelers
Whether you want to be always ready or impress your friends on holidays, these are essential phrases you'll thank me for:
Encantado / Encantada - Nice to meet you. Use the one ending in -o if you are a man and the one ending in -a if you are a woman.
¿Qué tal? - How are you?
¿Cómo te llamas? - What's your name?
¿De dónde eres? - Where are you from?
¿Cuántos años tienes? - How old are you?
Ten un buen día - Have a nice day.
¡Lo siento! - Sorry!
Gracias - Thank you
De nada - You're welcome.
Un momento, por favor - A moment, please.
Buen provecho - Enjoy your meal!
¡Pásalo bien! - Have fun!
Este es mi número de teléfono - This is my phone number.
Quiero - I want .
Ex: Quiero una cerveza por favor - I want a beer please.
- ¿Podrías traer...? - Could you bring?
Ex: ¿Podrías traer una botella de agua? - Could you bring a bottle of water?
¿Cuánto es? - How much is it?
¿Es gratis? - Is it free (of charge)?
¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta de crédito? - Can I pay with credit card?
¿Está libre? - It is available?
¿Puedes ayudarme?- Can you help me?
¿Puedes repetir por favor? - Can you repeat please?
¿Cómo se escribe? - How do you spell it?
¿Hablas inglés? - Do you speak English?
¿Habla inglés? - Do you speak English (polite)Hablo solo un poco de español - I only speak a little bit of Spanish
¿Podrías decirlo en inglés? - Could you say it in English?
¿Puedo hablar con alguien que sepa inglés? - Can I speak with someone that speaks English?
¿Dónde está el baño?- Where are the toilets? - You can use aseo or servicio instead of baño.
¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?
¿Por dónde puedo ir a ...? - How can I go to ...?
Ex: ¿Por dónde puedo ir al museo de arte?
¿Está cerca o lejos? - Is it close or far away?
¿Dónde hay taxis cerca? - Where are taxis close from here?
Tiene postales / camisetas / regalos?- Do you have postcards/ t-shirts / souvenirs?
¿Me/nos puedes sacar una foto, por favor? - Can you take me/us a picture, please?
Estoy buscando (a) ... - I'm looking for ...
Ex: Estoy buscando a mi amigo - I'm looking for my friend.
Only use the a when you're talking about looking for a person, not a place.
Estoy perdido - I'm lost
Esta es la dirección de mi hotel - This is my hotel's address.
Estoy enfermo - I'm ill.
¡Fuego! - Fire!
¡Llamad a la policía / ambulancia! - Call the police / ambulance!
¡Ayuda! - -Help!
Some frequent basics:
Quiero... - I want...
Puedo...? - Can I...?
Puedes...? - Can you...? Podrías...?- Can you...? (more polite)
Dónde está...? - Where it is...?
Cuánto...?- How much...?
Cómo...? - How...?
Tiene...? - Do you have...? Tiene...? - Do you have...? (polite form)
Oh, and don´t forget to say por favor and gracias (please and thank you) ;)
