Four ways to use "mientras" in Spanish

Maybe you're familiar with mientras, but you might be missing a couple of useful ways to use it. Let's see all of its meanings:

Mientras

While

Mientras escribes, siempre escuchas música -
While you write, you always listen to music.

Estás cantando mientras limpias -
You're singing while you clean.

Mientras + subjunctive

As long as

Mientras hagas tus deberes, no me importa si juegas con los videojuegos -
As long as you do your homework, I don't care if you play videogames.

Mientras no te muevas, la foto saldrá bien -
As long as you don't move, the picture will turn out well.

Mientras tanto

Meanwhile, in the meantime

Yo estaba en casa trabajando y mientras tanto tú estabas de viaje -
I was at home working and in the meantime you were on a trip.

Aquí hubo varias tormentas muy fuertes. Mientras tanto, hacía sol allí -
Here there were several very strong storms. In the meantime/meanwhile, it was sunny there.

Mientras que

Whereas

Los teléfonos de ahora duran muy poco mientras que los teléfonos Nokia de antes duraban muchos años -
The phones from nowadays last very little whereas the Nokia's phones from before lasted a lot of years.

Tú haces garabatos cuando hablas con alguien mientras que yo camino por la habitación-
You do doodles when you talk with someone whereas I walk around the room.

Practice

Fill in the gaps with mientras (remember this one has different meaning if there is subjunctive right after), mientras tanto and mientras que:

  • El adora las películas de acción _______ yo las odio - He adores action movies_ I hate them.

  • Yo estoy leyendo y _________ mi hija está jugando en su habitación - I'm reading and ______ my daughter is playing in her room.

  • _____ tú decoras eso yo decoro esto - _____ you decorate that I decorate this.

  • Su casa está en la costa ________ la nuestra está en la ciudad - His house is in the coast _____ ours is in the city.

  • He estado preparando mis exámenes para septiembre todo el verano. _________ tú has disfrutado tu verano - I have been preparing my exams for September all Summer. ____ you have enjoyed your Summer.
