Common expressions with "hacer".

It's true that there're a lot of expressions with "hacer" and not in all of them the word keeps its original meaning, which is "to make" or "to do" (remember we don't distinguish between those two). So I put together all the uses and common phrases that use this verb.
You can't be wrong with this list:

Expressions of time

1. Hace + time + que + present tense - duration

   Ex: Hace un año que estudio español.
   I’ve been studying Spanish for a year.

   You can alter the order and add "desde": Present tense + desde hace + time
   Ex: Estudio español desde hace un año.
   I’ve been studing Spanish for a year.

   You can also make the negative of it:
   Ex: No hablo con mi abuela desde hace tres semanas.
   I haven’t talked with my grandma for three weeks.

   Notice how the expression can't be translated in the same way every time because it addapts to what you say in the sentence, however the meaning remains the same: duration.

2. Hace + time + preterite - time ago
   Ex: Hace dos semanas fui al médico.
   Two weeks ago I went to the doctor

3. Hace mucho tiempo + preterite – a long time ago
   Ex1: Hace mucho tiempo mi tío me visitó.
   A long time ago, my uncle visited me.

   If you use “que” + present tense, the meaning change slightly.

   Ex1: Hace mucho tiempo que soy famosa.
   I’ve been famous for a long time
   Ex2: Hace mucho tiempo que no vamos al río.
   It’s been a long time since we went to the river.

   3.1. Hace poco – a little while ago (same use)

Expressions to express the weather

1. ¿Qué tiempo hace? - what is the weather like?

2. Hace sol – it’s sunny
   Hace frío – it’s cold

3. Hace calor – it’s hot
   Hace viento – it’s windy

4. Hace buen tiempo – it’s good weather
   Hace mal tiempo – it’s bad weather

Common phrases

1. Hacer cola – to line up
   Ex: Tienes que hacer cola para comprar carne.
   You have to line up to buy meat.

2. Hacer falta – to be needed (impersonal)
   Ex: Para hacer esta tarta hace falta harina y azucar.
   To make this cake flour and sugar are needed.
   It can also mean someone or something needs something (more specific)
   Ex1: A mi amigo le hace falta una novia
   My friend needs a girlfriend.
   Ex2: A este plato le hace falta más sal
   This dish needs more salt

3. Hacer señas – to signal /to make signals.
   Ex: Mi padre me hace señas con los brazos cuando aparco.
   My dad signals with the arms when I park.

4. Hacer frente – to face something
   Ex: Tienes que hacer frente a la situación.
   You have to face the situation.

5. Hacerse – to become
   Ex: Me hago fuerte cuando hay problemas.
   I become strong when there are problems.
   We can't use it with many adjectives but these are some that work really well here:
   Hacerse mayor - to become older /
   Hacerse responsable - to become responsible /
   Hacerse un lío - become a mess.

   One variation is: Hacerse tarde – to get / become late.
   Ex: Se hace tarde
   It’s getting late.

6. Hacerse ilusiones – to get your hopes up.
   Ex: Me hice ilusiones con mi banda de rock.
   I got my hopes up with my rock band.

7. Hacer daño (a alguien) – to harm, to hurt (someone)
   Ex: Ese secreto me hace mucho daño.
   That secret hurts me a lot.

8. Hacer de – to work as, to act as.
   Ex1: En la obra hago de bruja.
   In the play I act as a witch.
   Ex2: Hago de canguro para ganar un poco de dinero.
   I babysit to get a little bit of money (canguro – babysitter).

9. Hacer alusión (a alguien) – to mention, to allude (someone)
   Ex: Ramón siempre hace alusión a su abuelo cuando cuenta una historia.
   Ramón always mentions his grandfather when he tells a story.
   Ex2: No me gusta hacer alusión al pasado
   I don't like mentioning the past.

10. Hacer la vista gorda - pretend you don’t notice something.
    Ex: El alumno estaba hablando pero la profesora hizo la vista gorda.
    The pupil was talking but the teacher pretended not to notice.
    Ex2: El árbitro hizo la vista gorda
    The referee pretended not to notice.

11. Hacer la pelota – adulate.
    Ex: Juan siempre le hace la pelota al jefe.
    Juan always adulates the boss.

12. Hacer sombra (a alguien) – To upstage (someone).
    Ex: María odia a Marta porque Marta le hace sombra con su talento.
    María hates Marta because Marta upstage her with her talent.

13. Hacer buenas migas – to become friends.
    Ex: Mi primo y tu hermano hicieron buenas migas.
    My cousin and your brother became friends.

14. Hacer burla de – to make fun of.
    Ex: Tus amigos hacen burla de mi hermana.
    Your friends make fun of my sister.

15. Hacer un favor – to do a favour.
    Ex: ¿Me puedes hacer un favor?
    Can you do me a favour?

16. Hacer saber (a alguien) – to inform, let (someone) know about something.
    Ex: Me hizo saber que la empresa iba a cerrar.
    He/she let me know that the company was going to close.
